How It Works
The Fit The Fit The final stage of evaluation determines if the charity is
a good fit for GoodSpark. We have a duty to our donors to
to provide them with tangible evidence of how their donations
are being put to work. In order for an organization to become
a GoodSpark charity, they must agree to deliver specific
updates on how they are putting our funds to use. In most
cases, the charities custom tailor programs for the GoodSpark
community to make the connection that much closer.
Best Practices This stage of the process focuses on governance and
oversight. We seek organizations with sustainable and
transparent business practices, and have put together a
series of questions that pull from both for-and-non-profit
business best practice standards.
Program Effectiveness This is the core of the evaluation. Not only do we break
down the organization's programs and projects, we also
take a close look at whether or not the organzation is
executing their mission and continuously identifying
ways to evolve and improve.
Financials Unlike other sites, we don't base our decisions solely on
financial indicators - we feel they only tell part of the
story. However, financial analysis is an important part of
the evaluation process and we do analyze the financial
information each charity provides in its informational
tax returns (IRS form 990).
Fundamentals The first step in our rigorous process is to validate the
charity's legitimacy and status as a 501(c)(3) organization
in the United States.

The Science of the Spark

All charities go through the same selection process. We focus exclusively on charities that have the ability to measure success and provide evidence of impact. Although we analyze many aspects of each organization, it is the organization's results that drive the final decision to make it a GoodSpark charity of choice.
