Start your engines!

Sunday, December 25th, 2011

Charity Engine may be on to something.  They have found a way for people to give back without even having to lift a finger (ok, maybe just to type in a url).

The Charity Engine is a non-profit volunteer computing grid. Based on Berkeley University’s BOINC software for grid computing – as used by dozens of famous ‘citizen science’ projects such as SETI@home. Charity Engine’s version of BOINC simply donates what it makes from research projects on its grid and donates the cash to charity, while incentivising users with randomly generated cash prizes. Profit from the commissions from science and industry is shared 50-50 between the charities and prize winners. You can use the invite code for the beta: CRUNCH

Full story here thanks to TechCrunch

This holiday season, rather than remaining on the couch in a self induced food coma, wobble over to your computer and let the giving begin.

Colorado Gives Day is almost here!

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

It’s that time again.  Coloradans put forth an incredible effort last year and tipped the giving scales at just over $8.7 Million.  With thousands upon thousands of charities to choose from, it’s hard to make a choice.  The Community First Foundation makes that process a heck of a lot easier with their Giving First tool (designed by our friends at CiviCore)

We encourage everyone to dig deep this holiday season and support the charities you care about.  Check out http://www.cogivesday.org/

Pridefest is this weekend!

About TEDx

In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading,” TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxMileHigh, where x = independently organized TED event. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world’s leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

TED2011, “The Rediscovery of Wonder,” was held February 28-March 4, 2011, in Long Beach, California, along with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs, California. TEDGlobal 2011, “The Stuff of Life,” will be held July 11-15, 2011, in Edinburgh, Scotland.

More Than 70 Ways to Learn About Local Nonprofits

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Homelessness. Sustainability. Developmental Disabilities. Arts Education.

GoodSpark received more than 70 entries for the first Get Up & Give Digital Media Challenge. The submissions came from nonprofits of all sizes and shapes. The causes and solutions were diverse. But, they all had one thing in common.

They inspired us.

When GoodSpark developed the Get Up & Give Digital Media Challenge, we were trying to test a theory. We know that one person has the power to make a difference. What if that one person could inspire hundreds and thousands of others to do the same? So, we challenged the community (individuals, nonprofits, creative folks) to develop a digital short or photograph that will inspire young professionals to take action – giving of their time or money to make their community and world a better place.

In case you missed it, we highlighted a selection of the entries at GoodSpark’s first annual Get Up & Give event on Thursday, September 9th at Space Gallery. The attendees were tasked with selecting the top three photos and videos. It wasn’t an easy choice. To view the winners, visit: And the winners are…

But, we want to turn your attention to the other submissions. They were unique, compelling, powerful and heartfelt. We learned more about organizations that we already knew, and we were introduced to entirely new ones.

Have you heard about Elephant Energy and their work to promote entrepreneurship and nature conservation in rural Africa? Did you know that the EarthLinks Peace Garden has a beekeeping program to promote responsibility and self-esteem?

We didn’t.

So, this month GoodSpark will be highlighting all the photos and videos submitted for the Get Up & Give Challenge on Facebook and Twitter. Hopefully, you will be inspired to learn more and get involved with the extraordinary nonprofits that do GOOD things right in our own backyard.
